Incoming Students

Located in the heart of Switzerland, the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) is a particularly attractive place for foreign students. It is unique in Switzerland not only for some of its Bachelor and Master courses, but also for the opportunity of multilingual study courses.

Are you studying at a foreign university and interested in taking a semester at the Bern University of Applied Sciences? Foreign students can apply to take one or two visiting semesters at BFH. The BFH International Relations Office and the international contact person of the various departments and sections are pleased to provide you with advice and support.

BFH welcomes its exchange students!

BFH has extensive international links and maintains a close relation with foreign partner universities within and outside Europe. Student exchange agreements allow students from both partner institutions to acquire valuable experience in an exchange semester. Within Europe, student exchanges take place in the context of the Erasmus Programme.

More about Exchange Semester and the Swiss European Mobility Programme

BFH receives and supports foreign students both in regards to their studies and in terms of providing traineeships. We are increasingly interested in providing places in our research departments for research students from partner institutions in Switzerland and abroad.

Admission criteria

Prospective exchange students (for studies / placements) are advised to contact their home institution’s International Coordinator or International Office to find out whether a co-operation agreement has been concluded between the home institution and Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH). At first, students should always apply through their home institution so as to be nominated for an exchange period at BFH.

Exchange students enrolled at their home institutions need not meet the general admission criteria at Bern University of Applied Sciences for the respective degree programme. Instead, they must provide sufficient evidence of their academic background – a copy of all transcript of records should be provided along with the application. Furthermore, a copy of the passport and a standard passport-size photo must be provided.

Also, as majority of the studies at the university are conducted in German, the student must have sufficient proficiency in German (level C1) in order to be eligible to apply. For clinical placements, the required German language level may vary (min. B2) and shall therefore be decided on a case-to-case basis. If you want to know more about the application procedure for incoming erasmus students at our health faculty, please watch our video.

Buddy System

At our university we offer a programme called «Buddy System», wherein international incoming students are appointed a buddy – a current student at the university, preferably at the same faculty as the incoming student. The buddy will help you get familiarized with your city of residence and/or the university. Hence, if you are interested in being appointed a buddy, who can potentially also become a friend, please fill in the document  and send it back to the international office at as soon as you know all the details about your stay. We will try our best to find a buddy for you!
